The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) recently released new statistics on employment among disabled people in the UK, covering data up to March and June 2024.

These figures provide insight into progress and challenges in closing the disability employment gap. Key findings include:

Employment Numbers: Currently, 5.5 million working-age disabled people (aged 16-64) are employed in the UK.

Employment Rates: The employment rate for disabled people stands at 53%, significantly lower than the 81.6% rate for non-disabled people.

Unemployment Rates: Disabled people face an unemployment rate of 6.9%, nearly double the 3.6% rate for non-disabled individuals.

Economic Inactivity: The economic inactivity rate among disabled individuals—those not working or seeking work—is 43.1%, compared to 15.4% for non-disabled people.

Rising Disabled Workforce: The number of working-age disabled people increased by 580,000 over the past year.

Disability Employment Gap: While still substantial at 28.6%, the gap has narrowed by 0.6% since last year, indicating slight progress.

These figures highlight the persistent disparities disabled people face in the job market, underscoring the need for continued initiatives to improve accessibility, inclusion, and support for disabled employees in the workplace.
