The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has updated its guidance on fit notes.  There are three separate guides, one for patients and employees, a second for employers and line managers and a third for healthcare professionals.

The guidance for employers and line managers now also includes a checklist which employers may find helpful.  There is also a section online with Q&As and some case studies to assist employers less familiar with the rules around the use of fit notes.

Fit notes are of course only available once the employee has been absent from work for more than 7 days.  They can also only be issued for absences of up to 3 months at a time.  For absences of less than 7 days, employers should adopt the practice of requiring employees to complete self-certification forms.  This can be useful to the employer in understanding the nature of the illness and reason for the absence.  It also creates a process which might in some cases of less genuine absences ultimately help to reduce the time taken off sick.
